The calendar flipping from 2016 to 2017 wasn’t the only thing that happened while students were away from St. Clair County Community College the past three weeks.
Here’s a rundown of some of the news you may have missed during the winter break.
SC4 National Cyber League team places eighth in the nation
A year after finishing 10th in the nation in the annual National Cyber League postseason, SC4’s team, led by networking instructor Rob Richardson, improved upon its place, taking eighth in the 2016 competition.
SC4 was the top school from Michigan in the competition, finishing ahead of four-year schools such as Ferris State and Eastern Michigan.
“It’s almost like the SC4’s men’s basketball team played in a tournament with Divison 1 schools and major league teams and came in eighth,” Richardson told the Times Herald. “That’s amazing.”
Yes. It is.
Skippers Athletics Hall of Fame announced
On Saturday, Jan. 21, SC4 will induct the first class into the Skippers Athletics Hall of Fame.
Two individuals — legendary coaches Richard “Dick” Groch and Robert “Sam” Kromer — will join six teams — the 2000 and 2004 volleyball teams, the 1970 men’s golf team, 1976 baseball team, 1994-95 women’s basketball team and 2009-10 men’s basketball team — in the inaugural class.
The event starts with a reception at 5:30 p.m. and a ceremony at 6:30 p.m. in the McMorran Theatre. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at the McMorran box office. That same day, the SC4 women’s and men’s basketball teams will play against Mott CC in the SC4 Fieldhouse. The women’s game starts at 1 p.m. with the men to follow.
Basketball teams start conference play
Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams started their seasons 1-1 in the Michigan Community College Athletic Association Eastern Conference.
The women defeated Alpena CC 65-63 this past Saturday at home, bouncing back from a 73-40 defeat on Thursday at Macomb CC.
The men also defeated Alpena CC, winning 92-83, and lost 98-72 against Macomb.
The teams are back in action Wednesday, Jan. 11, at Wayne County, and return home Friday, Jan. 13, against Oakland. The women tip-off at 5:30, followed by the men at 7:30.
